Tow Bars

SCROLL

What type of tow bar?

There are two main types of tow bar available either fixed and detachable.
Fixed type tow bars include swan neck and flange. Both of these types stay fastened to the vehicle. And are a permanent fixed position and visible at the rear of the vehicle. This type of tow bar is usually the cheaper option.

Detachable type tow bars include swan neck and detachable flange. As the name suggests these can be easily detached from the vehicle. The detachable type also come with a flip down socket bracket, so when the bar and socket are not in use the rear of the vehicle looks the same as if there was no tow fitted. These are usually fastened into place when in use via a key or a locking mechanism.

What electrics do I need?

There are three main sockets available to fit to your vehicle 7pin, 13 pin and twin (7pin + 12s), the 7 pin and the 13 pin are now the most common, twin sockets were fitted to caravan built before 2008 and there are now adapters to convert your 13 pin to a twin if needed.

Dedicated wiring kits

Dedicated wiring kits or vehicle Specific Wiring Kits plug into the vehicle’s existing wiring harness and provide either 7 pin or 13 pin solutions that work with your vehicle. Vehicle specific wiring kits provide the ultimate peace of mind in terms of both safety and reliability.
Many vehicle manufacturers now design into their cars electrical systems the ability for the car to recognise when a trailer has been connected. The vehicle will then alter its characteristics to help create a safe towing environment for the vehicle and its passengers. These features often require activation by the towbar fitter or the vehicles main dealer, the correct diagnostic tool will be needed to tell the car a tow bar has been fitted for all the new functions to work. extra charges for this service will apply if needed.
Benefits of a Vehicle Specific Wiring Kit:
• Won’t damage vehicles existing electrics
• Peace of mind in terms of safety and reliability
• Manufactured from high quality components
• Easy to fit
• Work in complete harmony with the vehicles safety systems
7 Pin Socket (lights)
Single Electrics, mainly know as a 7 pin socket or tailer socket, are fitted as standard. This socket provides the power the light from your vehicle to the lights on a trailer or caravan.
If you’re only going to be towing a trailer this is all you need. You can tow a caravan using only single electrics, but the interior functions of the caravan, such as the fridge, will not have power to them.
12S Electrics (power socket)
Twin Electrics, or 12(S), this socket provides the extra power supply to your caravan, you will only find tis fitted to caravans built before 2008,
The extra grey socket provides power to operate the interior functions of the caravan such as the interior lights, run the fridge and charge the battery while you are towing.
13 Pin Electrics, Euro socket (light and power)
13 pin Electrics have been standard in most other European countries for some time. This is replacing the 2 separate sockets currently used in the UK. The 13 pin socket is essentially the two 7 pin sockets merged in to one.
All caravans manufactured in the UK from 2008 are fitted with an ISO 13 pin connector as standard. This system uses one socket with 13 pins inside, instead of the traditional two separate 7 pin sockets.
