Suspension

SCROLL

What is suspension?

The suspension system of your car or van is composed of multiple parts that work together to provide a comfortable ride while maintaining stability on the road, Suspension has come a long way over the years and different manufactures have tried and test many different suspensions set ups to get your vehicle to handle to its best.

If you’ve ever experienced problems with your vehicle’s suspension, you know how frustrating it can be. Not only are these issues uncomfortable but they may also affect the safety and performance of the car as well. With the condition of our roads and poor weather conditions we are experiencing more and more premature suspension issues and failure. From broken springs, shock absorber damage, anti-roll bar links damaged, ball joint damage and bushes failing.

How can I tell if my car has suspension problems?

If you hear any unusual noises when driving over uneven roads or pot holes, this could be a sign of worn suspension ball joints, broken springs or worn bushes
If you notice your car or van is pulling to one side or the other while you’re driving, the problem could be with your tyres, worn suspension, steering or your brakes.

Your vehicle wheels and tyres need to be precisely aligned to ensure a smooth ride. Take a look at your tyre treads to see if they are wearing evenly, and check that the tyres are correctly inflated, under-inflated tyres can impact your stability while driving.
If the problem continues after you have checked your tyres, take a look at your suspension system. Can you spot any signs of wear or damage on your shock absorbers, ball joints or suspension arms? If you’re not sure what you’re looking for, it’s best to talk to a qualified mechanic as suspension problems can have serious safety implications.

If you notice that one corner of your car seems to be a lot lower than the others, there’s a good chance you have a worn or damaged spring. You may also notice a clunking noise as you drive over bumps or a deep pothole.

Broken Suspension Springs?

Springs usually brake at a time when you least expect it, you could be reversing off your drive way and you hear a bang, you could be driving along and hit some bumps in the road and then hear a clanging sound or you may hear a knock noise and then not realise until you get you car inspected. There have been some cases when a vehicle has come in for its annual service and we have found that 2 or 3 suspension spring had broken and the customer not realise.

Is driving on a broken spring dangerous? the answer is yes; a broken spring would fail a mot and be classed as dangerous and to not drive the vehicle until repaired. The spring that is broken could do further damage or cause an accident. On the front on your vehicle if you have a McPherson strut then you will have a top mounting and bearing this can get damage or can collapse, we have also seen brake hoses damages and tyres damage due to brake suspension spring, if you think you may have a broken spring we can help and we would advise you get your vehicle inspected by a trained technician as soon as possible
