Power assisted steering

The invention of power assisted steering was revolutionary for vehicles and their drivers, did you know? that it was Chrysler who introduced the first commercially available passenger car power steering system on the 1951 Chrysler Imperial under the name "Hydraguide".

Back in 1956, the some of the steering wheels fitted to some vehicles were as big as 20-inch in diameter, in order to assist with the steering. This would have required much more effort than in today's cars.

Now every car on the road today is fitted with some kind of power assisted steering, from hydraulic systems with use a belt to drive a pump which then pumps hydraulic fluid around the steering rack, to semi electronic systems that use an electronic pump to pump the fluid around the steering rack and also fully electronic systems that use direct motors that attach to the steering column or steering rack.

Steering faults and symptoms

If you have ever experienced faults with your steering then you will understand the different feelings you get through the steering wheel. If you have hydraulic power steering system fitted to your car or van, it is important to check your fluid and this should also be checked as part of a regular service, if you can feel any juddering when turning or maybe a loud whining noise also when turning it is best to check your fluid level, you could have a leak or fluid quality could be deteriorated or you may wear damage to the pump or steering rack. Knocking, clunks or clicks when rotating the steering can be caused by worn joints, columns or universal joints. We would recommend getting any of these faults checked out by a professional as soon as possible.

Electronic steering (EPS)

A fully electric power steering (EPS) system uses an electric motor module and sensors for it to work, this is placed either on the steering rack or steering column to assist the driver. Sensors attached to the motor measure how much torque, or rotational effort the driver is applying to the steering wheel. Common faults with the electric steering can be, loss of the steering assistance in one direction or both directions, the steering light illuminated on your dash or the intermittent steering heaviness that comes and goes. If you experience any of these symptoms then its best to get your vehicle checked out, we can code read the power steering module for any fault resent and also send away most electronic steering part of to be repaired.
