Clutches

SCROLL

Clutch issuses ?

Things to look out for if you think you clutch is worn or a problem with your clutch hydraulics. Older vehicles used a clutch cable to operate the clutch but on the modern-day vehicle things have now moved on and hydraulic systems are now use in place of the cable type.
• If your pedal is sometimes sticking on the floor and not returning up more than likely a hydraulic problem

• If you are driving along and when you accelerate the engine revs up but the car does not go any faster your clutch could be slipping

• If your clutch pedal drops to the floor and won’t return back up the cable or the hydraulics have snapped or failed

• If when pressing the clutch pedal down you get a juddering sensation through the pedal the dual mass flywheel could be worn or starting to fail.
• If the pedal is heavy or stiff to press the pressure plate springs could be causing this and the clutch could be starting to fail

• If there is a loud screeching noise when pressing the clutch, the release bearing could have failed or the bearing has worn into the pressure plate

• If you start to get a burning smell or what can only be described as an egg smell could be your clutch overheating and starting to break up

Dual mass flywheels

The dual mass flywheel (also known as the DMF) is designed to protect a vehicle's driveline from the torque and vibrations of the engine. The aim of the dual mass flywheel is to make the engine idle smoother and also make the gear changes smother to. The flywheel is located at the end of the crankshaft and clutch assembly then connects to the dual mass flywheel. Dual mass flywheels are usually fitted to vehicles with manual gearboxes, high torque diesel engine and in some petrol engines as well, in some cases we have also found they are fitted to some DSG gearboxes to.

Between the two flywheels are a series of springs, which dampen the engine vibrations and prevent most of them from reaching the gearbox.
How reliable are dual mass flywheels? This all depends on your driving style, lots of stop-start driving, for example in town, puts more stress on the dual mass flywheel (DMF) because it’s working hardest when the engine is idling and when you’re moving off from a stationary position. However, sometimes allowing the engine to labour in high gears also puts a strain on the DMF.

Symptoms of a worn DMF include increasing vibrations, especially through the clutch pedal. You may also hear a rattle, which will disappear when you depress the clutch. DMFs can last more than 100,000 miles but may wear out in as little as 20,000 - it depends on the quality of the part and your driving style.

We recommend changing the dual mass flywheel whenever the clutch is replaced, because it’s accessed more easily when this job is being carried out, the problem is, you just don’t know until you remove it, and it’s considered a false economy to leave it in place and change only the clutch.
